Any bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple uses, minimum lifetime capacity of 125 or more uses, carry 22 or more pounds over a distance of at least 175 feet, has a minimum volume of 15 liters, made of cloth or other machine washable fabric, Shall not contain lead, cadmium, or any other heavy metal in toxic amounts. Or made of other durable material including plastic at least 2.25 thick.

12/13/2012 meeting held to review ordinance. Vote will take place in early January 2013. City Council will consider a first reading of the bag ordinance. If approved, the ordinance must go through another reading before it is adopted. The ordinance would ban plastic bags and require an initial 10 cent charge per paper bag in all retail stores and restaurants. See the agenda report and ordinance (Item 9E).
